after-media -- A list to explore the remarkable transformation signalled by social media in the contemporary era.

About after-media
English (USA)

This list explores the remarkable transformation signalled by social media in the contemporary era. Key objectives are to research how contemporary networking sites such as Facebook and Orkut and Internet platforms such as YouTube and Flickr have facilitated new circuits of social communication, cultural consumption and sharing, and political mobilization; and to explore the problems posed by user-driven media formats for models of governance and regulation based on the imperatives of national sovereignty. We encourage a particular focus on the changing legal regimes developed to address social media issues, understood to be crucial sites of transformations and contests. We are particularly concerned to situate such contemporary changes in a complex history mapping the social basis and circuits of older and more recent media, including film and sound media, the emergence of audio and video-cassettes in the 1980s, and the development of a powerful scrambling and interlacing of media technologies, formats and publics across different platforms and devices with the proliferation of digital forms in the 1990s, and paper and electronic machineries of accounting and bureaucracy. Continuing our ongoing research, we are also curious to investigate the industries and cultures of data in contemporary media life.
