Overview
Location: Afghanistan (Mazar-i-Sharif, Kandahar, Khost and Jalalabad)
Duration: 3 months (position 1), 4 months (position 2)
Start Date: beginning September (position 1), mid-September (position 2)

The Novice Journalism Training Program (NJTP) operates in 6 locations
across Afghanistan to provide practical journalism training and
broadcasting experience for university journalism students. The
current focus is on radio but other media will play a role in the
project.
Duties
NJTP Trainers provide formal training and informal mentoring in
journalism, radio production and broadcasting to university students
studying journalism and related courses. They also provide editorial
guidance for broadcast output. Trainers assist the students to learn
professional standards and to build the experience and contacts
they'll need when seeking employment after finishing their university
coursework. Trainers also work closely with the local Station
Management Committee to improve local management and financial
sustainability. They also work closely with the university staff to
realise the long-term value of the NJTP.
Develop and deliver formal journalism and radio training courses
Provide informal mentoring from story development through to broadcasting
Provide management support and mentoring to regional radio operations
Develop and maintain close links between the NJTP program and each university
Assist to develop and maintain relations with local government, media
and other relevant organizations
Candidates should have skills/experience in:
media development in a developing country
development and delivery of journalism and radio training
professional journalism and broadcasting
working independently, with energy and commitment
working effectively in difficult conditions and varying cultural contexts
Candidates will have an advantage if they also have:
knowledge of Dari or Pashto
knowledge of the recent history and development context of Afghanistan

Senior Project Manager (Novice Journalism Training Program)

Location: Kabul with travel to regional offices
Start Date: Late September 2005
Duration: Minimum one year

The Novice Journalism Training Program (NJTP) operates in 6 locations
across Afghanistan to provide practical journalism training and
broadcasting experience for university journalism students. The
current focus is on radio but other media will play a role in the
project.
Duties
The Project Manager has strategic and operational responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be able to develop and manage the NJTP
within the political, donor and development context in Afghanistan.
Operationally, she or he will provide leadership within the NJTP,
recruit and manage staff, supervise regional operations, develop and
deliver training programs, plan and implement technical aspects of
the project and develop links between universities and the media
industry. In particular she or he will:
provide strategic direction for the NJTP and related media projects
develop and maintain relations with government, donors and media and
education sector organizations including universities, NGOs and
industry
develop training programs and coordinate national and international trainers
directly supervise Kabul NJTP staff and indirectly regional NJTP staff
undertake financial management and reporting
assess equipment needs and organise purchases
recruit Afghan national and international staff
Candidates should have skills/experience in:
media development in a developing country
development and delivery of journalism and radio training programs
project management including financial and project reporting
recruitment and supervision of staff
working effectively in difficult conditions and varying cultural contexts
some technical aspects of radio, print or television
Candidates will have an advantage if they also have:
knowledge of Dari or Pashto
knowledge of the recent history and development context of Afghanistan
