Performers, troupes, productions, and dramatic texts crisscrossed the seas
in the latter half of the nineteenth century, popularizing new genres and
styles.  The lecture will focus on the case study of the importation and
adaptation of domestic melodrama, a mid-Victorian cultural product,
refigures the history of modern theatre in India by locating it within
transnational networks.



Kathryn Hansen is Professor Emerita at the University of Texas at Austin,
where she directed the Center for Asian Studies and the South Asia
Institute. She is a cultural historian, translator, and scholar of theatre
traditions of South Asia.



She is the author of *Grounds for Play: The Nautanki Theatre of North India*,
just reissued in a new electronic edition.  She co-edited *A Wilderness of
Possibilities: Urdu Studies in Transnational Perspective*, and translated
and edited *The Parsi Theatre: Its Origins and Development*.  Her most
recent book is *Stages of Life: Indian Theatre Autobiographies*.



Ravi Vasudevan is Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies.
